Line begins to form for lead counsel committee in Toyota MDL
Dan Becnel Jr. became the first plaintiffs' attorney to apply for the coveted lead counsel status in the multidistrict litigation (MDL) against Toyota Motor Corp. In a court document filed on April 22, Becnel said: "I do not believe anyone in the country has as much experience that I have in MDLs over the past 25 years."

Plaintiffs' lawyers filing the latest oil spill lawsuit against BP decided to bypass the federal trial court in New Orleans with its raft of conflicted-out judges. Instead, the team of seven firms filed a securities fraud class action in the Western District of Louisiana on June 7.Lead Vioxx Plaintiffs Lawyers Awarded $315 Million of $4.85 Billion Settlement
The plaintiffs lawyers who did the lion's share of the work in attaining a $4.85 billion global settlement from Merck in the Vioxx mass tort are being rewarded for their efforts. The federal judge who oversaw the multidistrict litigation has awarded $315,250,000 to "all attorneys who performed common benefit work" in the MDL and associated state litigation. That amounts to 6.5 percent of the $4.85 billion settlement. The ruling is also notable for the judge's musings on selecting lead plaintiffs counsel in a sweeping MDL.
