In late February, a patent for an Internet-based customer referral system issued to Amazon.com. Not long afterward, a British company sent out a press release claiming to have put similar technology in place several years before Amazon filed for a patent. The technology allows other Web sites to refer customers to Amazon in exchange for a fee paid by the bookseller. But British company EarthPort.com claims to have developed its program in 1995 for an online lottery benefiting the International Red Cross.

'NLJ 250' Shows Lawyer Ranks Growing Again

After a lull in growth at the 250 largest law firms in the U.S., the pace is picking up. The annual survey by The National Law Journal shows the overall number of attorneys increased by 4.4 percent this year, compared to a paltry 1.5 percent and 1.6 percent the two prior years. And although familiar faces had trouble adapting to market changes, consolidation made room for regional powers.
