Cooley Godward and Kronish Lieb Agree to Merge

Leading Silicon Valley law firm Cooley Godward has agreed to merge with New York litigation boutique Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman to create a national firm of 550 lawyers, effective Oct. 1. Although the 440-lawyer Cooley has made no secret of its merger ambitions and its quest for a substantial New York presence, Kronish Lieb is something of a surprise partner. The 110-lawyer firm has long been regarded as one of the city's most fiercely independent firms.

Bay Area Backslide

Hammered by the sour stock market and dismal economy, California's elite technology firms continued their slide among the nation's top grossing firms. The annual rankings of the 100 highest-grossing U.S. firms, published Monday in Recorder affiliate The American Lawyer magazine, shows that firms like Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich and -- of course -- the now-defunct Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison sank in both revenue and profitability last year.

New Law Firm Targets E-Discovery Angst

In a fitting response to the burdens of electronic discovery, four far-flung experts launched a "virtual" law firm Monday, hoping to capitalize on the growing anxiety at legal departments and boardrooms across the country. Harris Getting Reinforcements for Gang Unit

A bad week for the U.S. attorney's office turned into a good one for San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris. Brass will join Harris' three-person gang unit, focusing on murders and shootings. He is the first of eight new hires Harris hopes to make in the next fiscal year.

Your Rsum as a Business Tool

There is a temptation to think of a rsum as purely a tool for gaining employment that becomes largely irrelevant once a job has been found. Once you have a job, in short, it seems pointless and burdensome to spend time on your rsum (unless and until it comes time to answer the headhunters' siren calls). Yet your rsum can be an extremely valuable business tool, for many purposes, beyond simply finding a job.

San Francisco Mortgage Fraud Closings Draw Crowd

Some experienced white-collar hands assembled for closings Monday in one of the few federal mortgage fraud cases to hit a Northern California jury. Judy Yeung, a woman well known in San Francisco political circles, is accused of using straw buyers to obtain fraudulent mortgages totaling $6.5 million. Her case is fairly representative of the DOJ's local mortgage fraud docket; since the housing market collapsed, prosecutors haven't brought any large-scale indictments against corporate lenders in the Bay Area.
