New Law Firm Targets E-Discovery Angst
In a fitting response to the burdens of electronic discovery, four far-flung experts launched a "virtual" law firm Monday, hoping to capitalize on the growing anxiety at legal departments and boardrooms across the country. A partner at Redgrave Daley Ragan & Wagner says the new firm will offer strategic advice on management of digital information, responses to e-discovery requests and the risks involved in the integration of information systems in the aftermath of a merger or acquisition.
Harris Getting Reinforcements for Gang Unit
A bad week for the U.S. attorney's office turned into a good one for San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris. Anthony Brass, who had left the DA's office in 2002 to work for U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan, announced Friday he is stepping down as a federal prosecutor to go after gangs for Harris. Brass will join Harris' three-person gang unit, focusing on murders and shootings. He is the first of eight new hires Harris hopes to make in the next fiscal year.Your R�sum� as a Business Tool

Some experienced white-collar hands assembled for closings Monday in one of the few federal mortgage fraud cases to hit a Northern California jury. Judy Yeung, a woman well known in San Francisco political circles, is accused of using straw buyers to obtain fraudulent mortgages totaling $6.5 million. Her case is fairly representative of the DOJ's local mortgage fraud docket; since the housing market collapsed, prosecutors haven't brought any large-scale indictments against corporate lenders in the Bay Area.

Senators to Press for Suing OPEC Over Pricing
With energy prices soaring and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries planning to cut oil production, a coalition of senators plans to pressure President Bush to sue OPEC for price-fixing under U.S. antitrust laws. Akin Gump has poached a pair of partners from local Bay Area firms, bolstering its fledgling San Francisco outpost and underscoring the significance of out-of-town firms in the current lateral-partner recruiting season. Reginald Steer and Karen Kubin, longtime Bay Area litigators who practiced at Pillsbury Winthrop and Cooley Godward, respectively, announced Wednesday they were moving to Chicago-based Akin Gump.
