Squire Sanders and Hammonds Shore Up Merger Terms
The merger that could create Squire Sanders Hammonds still isn't final, but more details of the proposed combination are beginning to trickle in from across the Atlantic.Kim Dotcom, the founder of file-sharing site Megaupload has churned through a series of U.S. law firms that he's hired to fight U.S. criminal copyright infringement charges. If the Justice Department has its way, his latest set of lawyers at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan won't be around long either.
Talk about a turnaround! After a 2008 trial in which EchoStar won a whopping damages award of $45.69 (no, we're not missing the word "million") on its $2 billion in claims against NDS, the judge nevertheless awarded EchoStar attorneys fees of $13 million (and about $9 million to NDS). But the Ninth Circuit declared NDS the winner of the trial, vacated the EchoStar fee award, and doubled attorneys fees for NDS.
An appellate court ruled on Thursday that the Federal Aviation Act preempts the state regulation of all airlines. The decision came in a long-running litigation in which major carriers have been accused of conspiring to keep cargo shipping rates artificially high.
