3rd Circuit Upholds Lawyer's Conviction in Scheme to Launder Drug Money

New York solo Luis Flores claimed to be duped into believing that his client was a legitimate businessman and not the ringleader of a money-laundering scheme. But the 3rd Circuit didn't fall for it and upheld Flores' convictions of money laundering, conspiracy to launder money and conspiracy to structure transactions. Flores is currently serving a 32-month sentence and will probably lose his law license. His client was sentenced to 49 months, with credit for time served, and was released two weeks later.

Billionaire investor Ronald Perelman lost a multimillion-dollar lawsuit over how much money the estate of ex-wife Claudia Cohen should receive for her share in a family partnership. The court opted to enforce a formula in the partnership agreement that fixed the buyout at $177,808, rather than the $11.5 million sought by Perelman, the executor of the estate. The judge found the buyout price, though "radically" below fair-market value, was not unconscionable, but remarked that "the disparity offends my inner scale."
