Patent Lawyers Fight Limits on Federal Circuit

A group of patent lawyers is pushing for legislation to reverse a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that limits the reach of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit over patent disputes. Patent lawyers say the decision undermines Congress' intent to have one court decide patent issues and fear that patent rulings will be inconsistent if regional circuits and state courts decide such cases.

Sentence Guidelines Panel Stalled by Vacancies

The commission has not had a four-member quorum since last summer. Meanwhile, federal legislation on child sexual abuse, telemarketing fraud and identity theft has gone without guidelines.

'The Stuff of Tragedy'

A federal judge has dismissed a ground-breaking ``wrongful life'' that accused a hospital of ignoring the living will of one of its own doctors who had attempted suicide, forcing him to live the rest of his days in a vegetative state. U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell found that while the legal guardian for Dr. Marshall Klavan may have viable claims to bring in state court, he cannot pursue claims that Klavan's constitutional rights were violated. Dalzell said the case's facts "are the stuff of tragedy."
