If a lease guarantor has not agreed to extend the term of a lease, it may not be liable for the tenant's failure to pay rent during the extended term. This issue arose in the case of McIntyre Square Associates. v. Evans, (Pa. Super. May 30, 2003), in which the Pennsylvania Superior Court found that the trial court had erred in finding that the guarantors under the guaranty agreement had consented to material modifications of the lease.Duty to Client Extended Beyond Firm's Closing
A New York federal judge has ordered the former equity partners of a now-defunct law firm to step in as counsel for a client they last directly represented before their firm's dissolution in 2003. Though he noted that neither the code of professional responsibility nor New York partnership law directly addressed the issue, Southern District of New York Judge Charles S. Haight said the partners retained "the professional and ethical responsibility" for the representation despite the closing of their firm.Duane Morris Enters Singapore Market
Duane Morris Chairman Sheldon Bonovitz is making good on his plan to grow the 600-attorney firm to more than 1,000 lawyers with offices across the globe. The latest move gives the firm a six-attorney outpost in Singapore and plans for two Vietnam offices by the spring of 2007. According to Bonovitz, Duane Morris will be one of the top five U.S. firms in Singapore, and when its offices open in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Duane Morris will be one of only two U.S.-based firms in Vietnam.Public Interest Calendar of Events For October and November

The judges of the 3rd Circuit are sharply divided over some of the questions left unanswered by the U.S. Supreme Court in last year's United States v. Booker. In a pair of decisions handed down last week, the court answered some of the most pressing questions relating to appellate review and whether Booker applies to forfeiture and restitution.
