Did Exxon Cheat?

Eight years after Exxon dealers marched into court contending the oil giant cheated them out of discounts for more than a decade, their class-action suit is finally going to trial today in Florida. The stakes are huge: Some 10,000 dealers in 36 states are seeking $1 billion in damages. Until two weeks ago, even more was on the line. The dealers were also seeking $2 billion in punitive damages, but U.S. District Judge Alan S. Gold killed that request in a July 20 ruling.

Edwards campaign leads the pack in lawyer contributions

Lawyers and law firms dropped another $13 million into the coffers of the 2008 presidential campaigns during the second quarter, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. John Edwards continues to lead in lawyer contributions, with $6.5 million banked so far, but Hillary Clinton narrowed a first quarter gap after ending this quarter with a total $6.26 million raised from lawyers. Barack Obama raised $5.47 million from the legal community.
