Holland & Knight Joins Wave of Law Firms Boosting Associate Salaries

In a move likely to trigger a fresh round of associate pay hikes, Holland & Knight has raised first-year associate salaries in its South Florida offices from $125,000 to $130,000. Holland also announced Thursday that it is boosting starting associate salaries in its other offices, including raises to $160,000 in New York City and $145,000 in its Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles outposts. Holland's move is the latest in a wave of associate salary increases that has swept the country.

The NLJ 250: Call it growth — barely

The NLJ's 27th annual survey of the nation's 250 largest law firms reveals that the number of attorneys grew by a mere 1.5% over the past year after a 1.6% rate the year before. 2009 Worst Year for Lawyer Headcount in 3 Decades, Says 'NLJ 250' Survey

The United States' largest law firms this year suffered the deepest cuts in their attorney numbers since The National Law Journal began tracking the figures more than 30 years ago. The total number of attorneys working at the top 250 law firms plunged by 5,259 lawyers. Put another way, it's as if all of the lawyers working at two firms the size of Jones Day vanished in 2009.
