Appearance-Based Discrimination Suits Are on the Rise

Companies that regulate their workers' appearance -- from banning tattoos to mandating makeup -- are facing a growing number of appearance-based discrimination lawsuits, involving everything from eyebrow rings to sexy clothing. "It's not the IBM loose white shirt world anymore," said employment attorney Henry Perlowski, who predicted that as more and more "different" looking people enter the work force, "the tensions between culture and policy are going to escalate."

A private corrections company seeks to hold Locke Liddell & Sapp liable for more than $5 million that's allegedly missing from an account set up for a land deal. Cornell Companies Inc. sued the law firm and one of its partners, alleging they "dropped the ball" by failing to ensure that a proper escrow account was set up to hold the company's funds. As alleged in the petition, the defendants gave Cornell the "green light" to wire almost $13 million into what was purported to be an escrow account.

Motley Rice Lawyers Sued by Old Firm

The departure of four Atlanta attorneys from their securities class action firm to the powerhouse South Carolina plantiffs firm Motley Rice has stirred up some bad blood with the lawyers' old firm. Chitwood Harley Harnes has sued its four ex-lawyers, accusing them of taking proprietary information about the firm's clients and trying to recruit them to take their business to Motley Rice. It's the biggest loss of legal talent that Chitwood has experienced, says one attorney.
