With five weeks left, 2013 is already a record-setting year for tie-ups involving U.S. law firms. And as the latest spate of deals pushed the total number of mergers announced so far to 78—past the previous high of 70 set in 2008—The Am Law Daily caught up with legal consultants Ward Bower and Tony Williams to discuss the continuing trend toward consolidation here and abroad.A Dozen Firms Benefit from Big Telecom Transactions

Macfarlanes Responds to Ivory Coast Witness Tampering Claims
Macfarlanes has responded to allegations made on the BBC's "Newsnight" program that the firm has improperly handled its involvement in a long-running lawsuit defending oil trader Trafigura. The London law firm is representing Trafigura in a group litigation claim against the company for personal injury and damages, which is set to go to trial in October. The case involves up to 30,000 claimants who allege they were poisoned by toxic waste dumped in the Ivory Coast by Trafigura in 2006.Former Law Firm Partner Gets Prison Sentence for Kidnapping Hoax
Former Macfarlanes banking partner Francis Bridgeman has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after claiming he had been kidnapped in order to avoid being arrested for a DUI-related offense in 2010. Bridgeman was also ordered to pay �4,200 in costs and has been banned from driving for 18 months.
Macfarlanes Adds New 'Senior Associate' Rank
London-based Macfarlanes has introduced a senior associate rank for its up-and-coming lawyers. However, the firm said the new position will not be linked with additional remuneration and insisted that it will not become a compulsory career step in the route to partnership.Macfarlanes Boosts Salaries for Associate Ranks
U.K. firm Macfarlanes has unveiled across-the-board salary raises for all of its associates with some set to benefit from a 6.5 percent hike. Macfarlanes is one of the best-paying law firms outside of the Magic Circle, sitting in the second tier alongside the likes of Herbert Smith. Last week the firm reported a 5 percent hike in turnover for the last financial year to a new high of 110 million pounds ($219.25 million), although profits at the London firm have remained static.TRENDING STORIES
