Conflicts Between U.S. and U.K. Internet Defamation Law

Jennifer McDermott, a partner at Withers Bergman in London, and Chaya F. Weinberg-Brodt, of counsel at the firm's New York office, analyze a recent ruling that demonstrates that U.S. Internet defamation laws are geared to protect robust free speech and political and cultural diversity. In this regard, they note, U.S. law is substantially more protective of website operators than U.K. law, although moves are afoot in London to assist website operators.

The Pause That Refreshes

The number of lawyers taking sabbaticals is slowly growing, leading some firms to consider whether permitting sabbaticals is good business. Firms first began offering sabbaticals in California in the 1960s. The practice is now gaining more acceptance, although it's a benefit few partners seem to take advantage of. The new push, according to Notre Dame Law School professor Pat Schiltz, is to promote sabbaticals as a way to retain associates.
