Austin, Texas' largest firms continued to show gains this year in the number of minority lawyers employed. Of the almost 1,200 attorneys employed by the city's 26 largest firms, 126 -- or 10.6 percent -- are black, Hispanic, Asian or Native-American, according to figures compiled by the Hispanic Bar Association of Austin and the Austin Black Lawyers Association. A 16-firm coalition is keeping track of a proposed Texas tax reform that is scheduled to be unveiled on Wednesday and considered during a 30-day special legislative session beginning April 17. The proposal would replace the business franchise tax, which only a limited number of businesses pay, with a margin tax that would apply to a larger number of businesses, including limited liability partnerships.
