In Vioxx Settlement, Merck Hires Lawyers Across the U.S.

Merck & Co. has kept untold numbers of lawyers busy since its Vioxx headache began in 2004. With Tuesday's announcement that Merck has agreed to pay $58 million to end investigations by 29 states and Washington, D.C., into ads for its painkiller Vioxx, it looks like Merck hired lawyers in each of the 30 jurisdictions to sign settlements with each attorney general.

Federal Circuit: Group's Internet and Radio Worship Does Not Meet IRS Definition of 'Church'

The Federal Circuit has ruled that a religious organization that mainly holds Internet and radio worship services does not meet the Internal Revenue Service's definition of 'church.' A three-judge panel unanimously upheld a ruling by the Federal Claims Court in a case brought by the Foundation of Human Understanding. The foundation challenged an IRS determination that it did not meet the Internal Revenue Code's definition of a "church." The IRS granted the foundation tax-exempt status as a nonprofit in 1965.
