In their scholarly 668-page historical reference, "Representing Justice," Yale law professors Judith Resnik and Dennis Curtis plumb the history and icons of courts, to show that their finest hour might be now - and could be slipping away. Ancient civilizations promised justice with maxims of fairness to all, and personified the virtue "Justice" with sword, scales and sometimes a blindfold. But the symbols and slogans smoothed over vast gaps - with women and minorities denied full participation on into the 20th century.
