Fed. Judge Approves $17.75 Mil. 'Kids-for-Cash' Settlement

U.S. District Judge A. Richard Caputo of the Middle District of Pennsylvania has approved the $17.75 million settlement that Robert K. Mericle, the builder of two juvenile detention facilities who allegedly paid millions in "finder's fees" to former Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judges Michael T. Conahan and Mark A. Ciavarella Jr., agreed to last December in a civil suit brought by a class of juvenile plaintiffs.

Financially strained investment bank Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc., has decided to sell its 20 percent stake in Bloomberg LP, the financial news, media and data provider, back to the blind trust owned by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg for $4.5 billion. When the deal is completed, Mr. Bloomberg will own 92 percent of the company he founded. Also, Israel-based drugmaker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has announced its acquisition of U.S. rival Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. in an $8.9 billion deal.
