Mining Bankruptcies Yield Roles for Davis Polk, Kirkland
Less than two years after Davis Polk & Wardwell helped Patriot Coal emerge from bankruptcy, a global commodities slump has forced the U.S. mining giant back into Chapter 11 in Virginia. With struggling energy and natural resource companies being potentially lucrative clients in a down market for corporate bankruptcy work, two other firms swooped in to pick up Patriot Coal's “Chapter 22” case, but Davis Polk still took the lead on another major mining bankruptcy.
