11th Circuit to Decide if Lawyer Can Sue Stock Market Over WorldCom Losses

When investors were stung by the 2002 WorldCom stock plunge, lawyers were ready to sue on their behalf against executives of the company and its underwriters, financial advisers and auditors. But Florida lawyer Steven I. Weissman sued NASDAQ itself, as well as its former parent, the National Association of Securities Dealers, claiming that NASDAQ's ads fraudulently induced him to buy WorldCom stock by touting the stock's virtues. The full 11th Circuit will hear the case at a rare en banc hearing Tuesday.
