Georgia Justices Pass Expert Witness Issue Back to Legislature

Last April, the Georgia Supreme Court voted to consider adopting a strict expert witness rule that had failed to get through the General Assembly. But thanks to two justices' apparent change of heart, the court has now announced it will not decide the case. Tort reform advocates had hoped Georgia would become the next state to adopt expert standards set by the U.S. Supreme Court in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals.

5th Circuit to Weigh Jurisdiction Over Contractors in Iraq

More than 1,000 private contractors have been killed in Iraq and 13,000 wounded. Among them: a Kellogg Brown & Root convoy caught in what became known as the Good Friday massacre. The 2004 attack is the focus of a crucial suit, which claims drivers were induced into believing they would not be put in active combat zones. The lease wasn't cheap-$327,000 a month in the first year-and the firm had been lured back downtown in part by a $1.

One Lawyer's Amazonian Adventure

Patent attorneys are used to going up against big companies for infringement, but for Pillsbury partner James Gatto, the battle is getting personal. That's because the attorney is fighting Amazon.com for infringement on his personal patent, an almost unheard of situation in the IP legal community. The case has already caused a bit of havoc for Gatto's old firms, including Baker Botts, Hunton & Williams and Mintz Levin, which have all been subpoenaed by Amazon's Kirkland & Ellis lawyers.

Fights Loom for Iraqi Riches

On the first day of the Iraq war, the president handed millions of dollars to nearly 150 Americans who had been held captive by Iraq during the first Gulf War, ending a four-year quest for compensation by the Americans and their lawyers, including Sprenger & Lang's Daniel Wolf. But some say the move will make it more difficult for other American victims of the Iraqi regime to collect civil penalties lodged against the country.
