The late Chief Justice William Rehnquist's confirmation battles were more intense than previously known, according to an FBI file that also offers new details on his 1981 hospitalization and dependence on a painkiller. One lawyer said the file gives evidence "showing how the FBI and DOJ were out to discredit opponents of Rehnquist." A professor who has written on justices' health through history said the file raised questions about "the long-term effect on Rehnquist" of using such a strong drug for so long.Midsize Firm Steefel Regroups as Partners Depart
Steefel, Levitt & Weiss, a midsize San Francisco-based firm known for its real estate practice, has lost 11 partners since January 2005, including two who announced this week they're leaving for Reed Smith. But the 65-lawyer firm is working on building itself back up. "The size that I think Steefel can do a good job at is a firm of 110 to 125 lawyers," says Chairman Barry Lee.
