Bingham McCutchen to Acquire Swidler Berlin

After eyeing the Washington, D.C., market for years, Boston-based Bingham McCutchen plans to acquire the ailing Swidler Berlin, a Bingham spokesman confirmed Thursday. The deal awaits approval by both partnerships, and due diligence is not yet complete, but this week the firms signed a letter of intent. The match would give the 850-lawyer Bingham a substantial Washington presence, more than tripling the firm's 55-lawyer D.C. office. For Swidler, the merger comes at the end of a long downward spiral.
