Ga. Bar, Chamber of Commerce Watch Governor on Judicial Raises
A proposal to raise salaries for Georgia's judges is receiving a bipartisan push, but what appeared to derail the idea earlier this year -- a lack of support from Gov. Sonny Perdue -- is a potential obstacle. The State Bar and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce back a 20 percent salary increase for jurists on the superior courts, the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. A letter the State Bar sent argues that higher salaries for judges is backed by Democrats, Republicans, lawyers and the business community.
Is FDA's New Chief Counsel a Change in Name Only?
The FDA's new chief counsel, Sheldon Bradshaw, has so far escaped the scrutiny faced by his predecessor, Daniel Troy, who was pilloried for his close ties to the drug industry. But Troy's controversial legal policies remain very much in force. Like Troy, Bradshaw offers one-on-one meetings with companies regulated by the agency, has kept low the number of warnings given about violations of regulations, and, perhaps most notably, continues to intervene on drug companies' behalf in private civil suits.

Veysey, a veteran of wars -- corporate, legal and military -- survived a takeover last year by San Jose, Calif.-based high-tech giant Cisco Systems Inc. with his job and his legal department intact. As the House began debating a bill on July 1 to modernize the financial services industry, it appeared that Congress, weary of 20 years of failure, was moving to allow banks, securities firms and insurance companies to merge with one another. The Senate approved similar legislation on May 6.
