Survey Shows Diversity Lacking at Pa. Plaintiffs Firms

Despite increased emphasis on recruiting minority and female attorneys, plaintiffs firms in Pennsylvania remain predominately the province of white men, says a survey of 24 firms taken by The Legal Intelligencer. Out of 301 attorneys accounted for in the report, eight attorneys were racial or ethnic minorities -- less than 3 percent. The percentage of women attorneys overall was about 23 percent -- 70 out of 301 attorneys. Reasons for this disparity are many, according to the firm leaders.

Diversity Still Low, Optimism High in Plaintiffs Bar

Last year, The Legal Intelligencer surveyed the 24 largest plaintiffs firms across Pennsylvania and found diversity to be almost nonexistent among them. "It was a good wake-up call," says Mark Tanner, president of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association. But a survey of the same firms this year yielded only slightly better numbers. Despite the lack of significant improvement, some lawyers are optimistic that diversity has at least become a priority in the plaintiffs bar over the past 12 months.
