San Francisco's Rudy, Exelrod & Zieff won about $90 million in 2001 for a class of insurance adjusters who claimed they had been cheated out of overtime pay. But one of the adjusters sued the firm for malpractice, contending it should have pursued an additional claim under the state's unfair competition law, which might have secured an even bigger recovery. On Tuesday, the 1st District Court of Appeal reluctantly decided the suit could go forward.

Judge Loses in Court Fight With Daughter

Alameda County Superior Court Judge D. Ronald Hyde must pay his daughter $1,600, a small claims court ruled Monday. That's the latest piece of bad news for the judge, who is waiting to fight seven counts of misconduct before a panel of special masters on March 24. The judge, who has been on the bench for 21 years, could face anything from public admonishment to removal if the Commission on Judicial Performance finds that he committed the misdeeds. The CJP disciplined Hyde once before, in 1996.
