Equitable Claim Key to Large Damage Award

A dispute involving California-based Fluor Enterprises, an engineering and construction company hired to build a chemical plant in Texas for Solutia Inc., has resulted in a $34.5 million verdict for Fluor. Fluor's suit, filed in federal court in Texas, claimed breach of contract and quantum meruit damages based on non-payment of additional charges due to drastic changes requested by Solutia during the final stages of construction.

Double Duty Weighs on Legislative Solos

Solos and small-firm lawyers who also serve in the Texas Legislature filed for most of the legislative continuances in court between 2003 and 2005, according to a new study by a political watchdog group. The study shows that just five lawyer-legislators, all of whom are solos or small-firm attorneys, accounted for 81 percent of the 431 legislative continuances. In the top slot: Roberto Alonzo, who sought 241. Phil King, who came in second, explains solos have no one to substitute for them in a crunch.
