The combined company, which will become one of the 10 largest banks in the nation, will have 655 branches and deposits of more than $84 billion. Also, Knight Ridder Inc., the second-largest newspaper chain in the country, was acquired for $4.5 billion by the McClatchy Company, and Gentiva Health Services Inc. acquired The Healthfield Group Inc. for $454 million.
