The New Jersey Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal of an $11.1 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson over allegedly harmful pelvic mesh implants.

Tuesday’s decision lets stand the nation’s first plaintiffs verdict over the implants, which are made by J&J subsidiary Ethicon. The verdict, awarded to Linda and Jeffrey Gross of South Dakota, included $3.35 million in compensatory damages and $7.76 million in punitive damages. It was awarded after a jury trial conducted by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Carol Higbee in July 2014.
