A Tax Court of New Jersey decision has made it easier for plaintiffs challenging the breadth of Princeton University’s tax-exempt status.

About two dozen residents are seeking a ruling that the university must pay property taxes on 170 tracts it owns. Over the objection of lawyers for the university, the court has ruled in Fields v. Trustees of Princeton University that the plaintiffs’ obligation for filing fees is satisfied by the $750 they have paid so far, and that a deficiency notice from the court seeking an additional $25,450 is vacated.
