To the Editor:

Three cheers for retired Assignment Judge Maurice Gallipoli on his splendid Sept. 2 commentary, "Stop the War Against the Judiciary." Gallipoli writes that our state constitution's tenure provision was never meant to lead to the present state of affairs, where reappointment of sitting Supreme Court justices depends upon the tyrannical thumbs-up or thumbs-down position our governor takes to their opinions. It is indeed a dangerous precedent that Gov. Chris Christie's injudicious refusal to renominate Justices John Wallace Jr. and Helen Hoens establishes. Christie now holds the Sword of Damocles over all untenured jurists, up to and including Chief Justice Stuart Rabner, according to several published news accounts.
