A reputed gang leader's murder conviction was overturned Tuesday because the judge failed to remove a juror who had ties to a witness and disclosed them to other jurors during deliberations.

A Mercer County judge wrongly failed to dismiss the juror when the witness relationship was disclosed during voir dire, instead trusting his assurances that he would keep quiet, the appeals court said in State v. Negrete, A-3301-09.
