An Essex County jury on Wednesday awarded $22.67 million in damages, including $15 million in punitives, to a gay trucking company employee verbally and physically abused on the job due to his sexual orientation.

According to the suit, from the start of Scott Specchio’s employment at New Penn Motor Express Inc. in South Kearny in 2003, supervisor Jeffrey Gulic used anti-gay slurs, struck and shoved him and wrote on him with a marker. He also teased Specchio about his brother’s death in an automobile accident.
