The estate of a workman who died of mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos on the job was awarded $1.77 million on July 13.

The Middlesex County suit, Barile v. Foster Wheeler, alleged that Walter Barile, a union insulator for Philip Carey Corp., was exposed to asbestos in two instances. In the first, Foster Wheeler, as general contractor on construction of a boiler at Exxon’s Bayway Refinery in Linden, brought in Carey and Barile removed improperly installed insulation. In the second, Barile was allegedly exposed to asbestos insulation at an Exxon plant in Bayonne. He died at age 72 on Dec. 3, 2007, after his pleural mesothelioma spread to his brain.
