An Atlantic County jury awarded $12.89 million on Wednesday to three Florida residents who developed inflammatory bowel disease after taking the acne medication Accutane.

Since 1984, the drug’s maker, Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. of Nutley, has included a reference to bowel problems in Accutane’s instructions to doctors only. The suits claimed the company should have warned patients and strengthened doctors’ warnings. The company disputed that its product caused the illness.
