AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals agreed to pay $425 million to settle lawsuits from about 11,000 consumers alleging they suffered kidney injuries after taking Nexium and Prilosec.

The settlement, announced on Tuesday, is the largest so far in the multidistrict litigation involving proton-pump inhibitor medications, used to treat heartburn and stomach acid. Three other companies—GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble and Pfizer—reached prior settlements totaling $108.5 million.
