We grieve the untimely death of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, who passed away on Tuesday while serving as acting governor during the vacation of Gov. Murphy with his family. Lt. Gov. Oliver, who is the first Black woman to hold statewide elected office in our state, had been speaker of the General Assembly before being elected lieutenant governor with Gov. Murphy when he was elected in 2017. Under the New Jersey Constitution, Senate President Nicholas Scutari has become acting governor until Murphy’s return to the state.

We join the many citizens of New Jersey in extending sincere condolences. Among other things, Ms. Oliver—who also served as commissioner of community affairs while lieutenant governor, and pressed for expanding the coverage of affordable housing and the provision of more government services at the municipal level—was known for her advocacy of diversity in government and the promotion of female and minority public officials.
