Passaic County is facing a 25% vacancy rate on its Superior Court and will soon join Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren counties, where all civil and matrimonial trials remain shut down since February due to the high rate of judicial vacancies.

The Superior Court bench is currently short 55 judges, and unless the Legislature acts on pending nominations over the summer, that number is expected to rise to 62 by Sept. 1. Last week, Chief Justice Stuart Rabner announced that the judiciary can now to lift the suspension of all civil and matrimonial trials in Vicinage 15, which is comprised of Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. But while the trial moratorium is lifted for those three counties, Vicinage 13 remains suspended, and now Vicinage 11, which covers Passaic County, faces the same shutdown beginning July 31.
