Monmouth County Judge Lisa P. Thornton, the first Black female assignment judge in New Jersey, has died at 59 years old.

Thornton, who was named to the bench by former Gov. Jon Corzine in 2008, officially took the helm of Monmouth County courts in September 2014. She previously served as the presiding family part judge and in the civil and criminal divisions. Her death was announced by the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners on the county website and by New Jersey judiciary.
