Judge Thomas M. Hardiman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit delivered the keynote address at Seton Hall School of Law’s 2017 “Hobbs Lecture” on April 3, 2017. Supported by Peter and Lee Larson and inaugurated in 2012, the annual Hobbs Lecture is dedicated to the spirit of civil discourse and diversity of opinion on matters of national importance. Hardiman spoke to a full house of law students, faculty, alumni, and community members on “The Art and Science of Judging in a Constitutional Republic.” Among the points Hardiman covered were: A good judge must adapt to the circumstances; displaying wisdom, intelligence, and being humble keepers of the oath; consider the differences between law and art; and understand how to balance moral sensibility with logical reasoning, while also knowing when to pursue compromise, how to access credibility, and how to assure wise and efficient justice. Other distinguished guests in attendance from the Third Circuit were: Judge Patty Shwartz, Judge Julio M. Fuentes, and Judge Michael Chagares (Seton Hall Law Class of ’87).
