MALL AND MID-SIZE firms in the New York City area find themselves in competition for legal talent with a great number of players – large firms, businesses, governmental agencies and other small and mid-size firms. The following article describes current hiring trends in the small and mid-size firms, provides tips on identifying a lawyer who will fit with the smaller firm, and suggests ways to retain those lawyers.

The Firms. Many smaller firms have been relatively unaffected by the economic downturn, particularly those with specialized practices. According to Bonnie Miller of Denver Associates, a New York City-based recruiting firm, “Bankruptcy, intellectual property and litigation are hot right now.” In general, the small firms which continue to hire have not seen an anticipated run-off of lateral associates who have been downsized by larger firms. Rather, most small firm candidates are attorneys who have decided to enter private practice after a stint in the public sector or are looking for a lateral move from a firm of a smaller or similar size.
