Thank goodness neophyte lawyers are no longer pouting about their $125,000- plus salaries, and middle-aged partners have stopped whining about missing out on the dot-com wave. The tech crash and economic downturn mean back to reality for lawyers everywhere. Traditional jobs, especially at established companies, have never looked more appealing. So it should be easy for corporations to hire the best and the brightest, right?

Not exactly. Some of the most coveted lawyers-especially those with expertise in fields such as intellectual property-are sitting tight. Everyone is more conservative about their careers, says San Francisco recruiter Katharine Patterson. Employers and employees alike are taking a cautious approach, giving each other the once-over before rushing off to a new union.
