Last year was a difficult year for New York City, perhaps the most difficult in its history. Nor does 2002 promise to be an easy time for many New Yorkers.

Despite calamity and economic setbacks, our city continues to be a place of vitality and great beauty. Whitman eloquently captures both these qualities, present in his day and present today.
