An 1838 treaty did not void a Cayuga Nation Reservation in New York state, and five parcels of land within the reserve area that the Cayugas have repurchased are not subject to local property taxes, a federal judge ruled.

Western District Judge Charles Siragusa ruled in Cayuga Indian Nation of New York v. Seneca County, 11-cv-6004, that the 1838 Treaty of Buffalo Creek between the United States and various Native American nations in New York did not “disestablish” the Cayuga Reservation, as the county maintained.
