A $12 million verdict upheld this week in New York County Supreme Court holds a health center liable for the injuries of a pedestrian struck by one of its employees running a company errand.

Justice James d’Auguste, in Couillard v. Shaw, 111969/2010, kept all but $1 million for future pain and suffering but added more interest, boosting the total to more than $14.5 million, according to the winning lawyer, Edmond Chakmakian of Hauppauge. He represents Kenneth Couillard, who was 52 when he was hit by a car while building a handicap access ramp in 2010. “I am exceedingly gratified that the court chose not to second-guess the jury,” said Chakmakian. He said the jurors “worked long and hard” after hearing weeks of “very difficult testimony about this tragic accident and its effect on this hard-working man and his family.”
