A Manhattan jury has awarded a $12.5 million verdict to the estate of an auto mechanic, a lifelong smoker who for nearly a decade worked on forklifts containing asbestos-laden parts and who died after an 18-month battle with lung cancer.

According to court documents George Cooney, who died at age 67, was employed by the Hyster Co. of Maspeth, Queens, from 1969 to 1980 as a mechanic and worked on various brands of forklifts throughout the New York City area.
