A federal appeals court Thursday recognized greater protections for internet service providers in their defense against copyright infringement claims.

Ruling for Vimeo, which runs a website where members can post personal videos, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit delivered a broader interpretation of the safe harbor provision in §512(c) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. The section gives protection to providers from copyright liability when they are unaware a user has uploaded infringing material.
