Richard Zabel, deputy to Southern District U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, is leaving the office to return to private practice.

Zabel, who was promoted to second-in-command in 2011 after heading the Criminal Division for two years during Bharara’s wide-ranging campaign against insider trading, will be joining the hedge fund Elliot Management as its general counsel.
