We are 17 student organizations at CUNY School of Law. We write to express concern about the prolonged bargaining between the management of MFY Legal Services Inc. and the union of MFY’s staff, the Legal Services Staff Association Local 2320 (LSSA). As students at a school whose institutional mission is to train lawyers who will serve the public, we care deeply that MFY’s dedicated legal staff are able to carry forward MFYs vital work in the community in a framework of professionalism, where staff who earn salaries already at the lower end of the public sector spectrum do not also have to sacrifice healthcare and related benefits, which increasing numbers of private employers recognize should be available.

MFY is one of the most respected legal service providers in New York. It has a proud tradition of delivering high quality professional services to vulnerable communities. Its staff should be incentivized to stay as long-term employees, respected for their experience and skill. MFY’s current bargaining position devalues the experience of senior staff, oftentimes pushing them away, while clients suffer.
