Nearly 3,000 default judgments totaling about $16 million will be vacated as part of a settlement between state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and two debt collection agencies accused of pursuing untimely actions under New York law.

Portfolio Recovery Associates (See Settlement) will also pay civil penalties and costs of $300,000 and the Sherman Financial Group (See Settlement) will pay $175,000 under the settlements announced Thursday.
