Joseph A. Doyle, a longtime banking lawyer at Shearman & Sterling who served as assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy during the Carter administration, died on April 4. He was 93.

Doyle joined Shearman & Sterling as an associate in 1947, after attending Columbia Law School on the GI Bill. He spent the next four decades at the firm and became a partner in 1957, serving on the management committee for several years.
